The crisis drives mobile phone market value down 30%

Regarding the value of the mobile phone market, this could reach RON 640 mln (about €152 mln) in 2009, 30.43 percent lower than in 2008, when this value amounted to RON 920 mln (€250 mln).

A rapid adjustment to the new market conditions and the change of business models helped the phone service market to overcome the peak of the economic crisis, according to officials of the state authorities. The unfavourable economic context, tight competition, and regulations led to lower tariffs imposed by mobile phone operators.

According to Costin Soare, Retail Director of Internity, a major player on the GSM retail market, “it is difficult to estimate the total market in 2009 at this time, because as we know from experience in previous years, December sales are a very important component in terms of total annual sales.”

According to players, the year 2010 will bring some changes in consumer behaviour, as these will more likely consider acquiring much better mobile terminals.
