“The X5 is a model that is suspiciously easy to steal for a car manufactured abroad. Thieves know the coding system very well,” Cătălin Stroe, Head of the Sales Division of the Asirom insurer, said. He added that the BMW and Audi brands were the most stolen cars insured by the company.
The Allianz-Ţiriac insurer received damage claims for 26 stolen BMW X5 and X6s in the first six months of this year. The total insured value for these cars exceeds €2 million, said Daniela Grigore, Chief Executive Officer for Damages of Allianz-Ţiriac Insurance.
The representative of another company on the market indicted that a Romanian registered BMW X5, insured for €61,000, was stolen in Bulgaria just a few days ago. Officials of brokerage companies said that owners of expensive cars should have GPS systems which would allow them to block the car’s engine with a simple command. “Insurance companies could encourage clients with expensive cars to install such systems, by offering them significant discounts,” said Bogdan Andriescu, President of the National Union of Insurance Brokerage and Consultancy Societies from Romania (UNSICAR).
