“We plan to restructure at least 70,000 jobs in the public sector this year, which would make salaries go back at the current level in 2011. We are also planning to dismiss 125,000 public employees next year, but a final decision has not been made yet as we are waiting for signals from the territory,” said Vass.

According to Boc’s councilor, the Executive aims to reach a number of public employees close to that in 2007-2008. As many as 250,000 new people were hired in the public sector since then, she said.

The government promised the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to slash the salary fund at 39 billion lei in 2011 and to reduce the number of public employees from 1.36 to 1.29 million this year.
